The St Andrews Trust supports Children and Families in Malawi and in the UK.

2007 Building of St Andrews School – Dedza, Chipseye Region, Malawi

Apart of the ‘Make Poverty History’ Campaign, we committed to raise £40,000 for the building of ‘The St Andrews School’ with the aim of helping combat the national illiteracy problem suffered in Malawi. Enough money was raised to build the school and provide necessary teaching equipment and materials. The Malawian Government has maintained ongoing responsibility for managing the school, completed in 2007, and it is attended by almost 500 children from the region.

2008 Schoolbags for Malawi Campaign

To provide additional support to The St Andrews School we ran the Schoolbags for Malawi Campaign with the support of St Kenneths,

Calderwood and West Coats Primary Schools in Glasgow. We asked for donations to fill schoolbags with the basics needed to learn, such as pencils, rubbers, rulers etc.

The response from the children, parents and teachers at these 3 schools was overwhelming and through their generosity, we were able to send over 400 filled schoolbags to The St Andrews School in Malawi.

2008 Improvements to Maternity Unit at Bottom Hospital, Lilongwe

Whilst on a project visit in March 2008, our team visited the maternity ward at Bottom Hospital in Lilongwe, which is the largest town in the Chipseye Region and where most medical care is provided.
to  The severe lack of resources was immediately evident, for example basic pain relief such as Paracetemol was in extremely short supply and often not available. The maternity ward had limited beds so that many expectant mothers were being cared for on the floor and what little equipment was in the delivery rooms was old, rusty and not suitable for providing a clean healthy environment for expectant mothers and their babies.
The Trust made an emergency donation of £60,000 worth of new equipment, supplies and much needed medicines, all of which are now in place, however, the medical centre will require long term support and we continue to raise funds for this project.

2008 Creating Long-Term Links in Malawi

During visits over the last few years and in particular 2008, The Trust has been able to cement important relations with Senior Government Officials in Lilongwe, which will importantly allow us to plough resources directly into our projects and will have a positive impact on expenditure and where funds are allocated.
By working directly with local agencies, builders and craftsmen we will achieve greater savings and improve on project timelines while, most importantly, providing employment directly within the region.
Maintaining these relationships and continually developing links with those that can support us within the Region is key to the successful delivery of our projects and we maintain a programme of regular communication to achieve this.

Each Year The St Andrews Trust supports UK Based Charities and Projects which support Children and their families.

Cash for Kids

Since 1981 Cash for Kids appeal has been helping to support the most vulnerable children in our communities. To date the appeal has raised over £16 million helping 1.5 million children.

Last year over 117,000 children facing financial, emotional, physical or educational challenges were helped by generous donations.

Each Christmas the trustees want to ensure that children experience all the happiness that any child looks forward to at this time of celebration.

Every year over 21,000 applications for support are received from individual families and social work departments across 15 local authorities. Donations help families buy Christmas presents and provide treats for their children, things most of us take for granted.

Statistics highlight the extent of child poverty across many of our communities. Over a quarter of a million children living in Scotland are living in poverty. Child poverty is not just material and economic, but also poverty of opportunity. It is widely accepted that children’s experiences in their earliest years of their lives, strongly influence their future.
